About the SCPS

The Scottish Collie Preservation Society was formed to preserve the old-fashioned collie. This collie was originally bred to work the farms in Scotland and Wales.

It has evolved over the years, but with the help of committed breeders, we are successfully bringing back the old-fashioned collie that was bred to be a versatile working dog.

Our Versatility Program

Our program is designed to be a way to acknowledge, showcase and reward our Scottish Collies who can demonstrate their versatility, intelligence, athleticism, biddability and training in both the traditional working skills of the breed and other popular dog sports and activities.

It can be a way to promote your dog as a sire or dam, or prove to prospective puppy buyers the quality of your breeding program.

Our Outcross Program

The SCPS Outcross Program is designed to assist in the maintenance of the health and genetic sustainability of the Scottish Collie breed.

The program is carefully regulated to ensure that the breed's historical temperament, working ability, structure, and physical appearance do not become watered down during the process of adding outside genes.

Become an SCPS Breeder!

When breeding dogs, a breeder needs to breed for the whole dog, not just select traits. A working dog is more than a just a pretty face or graceful mover-it is the whole package.

This requires selective breeding to create a true working line that encompasses structure, temperament and the ability to work. At SCPS our goal is to breed a true working collie reminiscent of the original Scottish Collie.

Genes are traits that are passed on from one generation to another. As breeders, dog’s exhibiting certain desired traits are selectively bred to pass on the genes that are believed to contribute to those traits.

This is a fantastic article which explains why genetic testing for health alone will not eliminate recessive mutations from developing in a breed. I have received permission from Carol Beuchat, Institute of Canine Biology, to
